About Us

Our Story

Kirby Muxloe Library and Community Hub is run under the auspices of LCC but the day-to-day running is undertaken by volunteers who give their time and skills for free. Today, local people are lucky to enjoy the benefits of a modern, purpose-built library, but this has not always been the case. Originally, the library was simply a collection of books held in the Church Hall on Main Street, until 1973 when the Parish Council approached the British Legion with a view to incorporating the War Memorial into a new library building to be called Kirby Muxloe War Memorial Library. There was some opposition to the idea, so eventually a stand-alone library was opened, which was replaced on the same site in 2006 by the current building.

In February 2016, following cuts in expenditure by Leicestershire County Council, residents formed a steering group with the aim of taking over and operating the library. A business plan was produced, trustees were elected and the group became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation or CIO, which meant they were able to take over the running of the library in April 2017. It was decided unanimously to provide not only library services, but also a community hub to meet the needs of the residents of Kirby Muxloe; and so, Kirby Muxloe Library and Community Hub was born.

Our Board of Trustees is responsible for strategic direction and management. Trustees meet on a regular basis to discuss policy and matters arising from the day to day running of the library, all contributing their time as volunteers. The library is now established as a thriving hub for the local community and we look forward to continuing for many years to come. As a charity-based library, we need your support to continue in this venture.
